Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway returned to make pair after Brokeback Mountain in this bitter comedy directed by Edward Zwick. Hathaway plays Maggie, a girl suffering from Parkinson's disease and Gyllenhaal an informant Scientific particularly enterprising with women. The two meet by accident and begin a turbulent relationship based on sex, although eventually succumb to the feeling. We are in the 90s and there is a boom of Viagra. Gyllenhaal's character, Jamie Randall, have good career opportunities in business through sales of the new drug has finally understood that to be able to engage seriously in a loving relationship. Too bad the girl he is in love is seriously ill and likely to worsen. The situation is inevitably more complicated, with attached doubts, hesitations and want to cut and run, but in the end love prevails and seems to be a happy ending. This is not a story particularly since the original theme was addressed in films such as Sweet November, Autumn in New York and the classic Love story ever, but certainly the director has the ingredients to make the determination of the film engaging.
Love and other remedies should be a romantic comedy where you laugh and cry, AC and I think this is a film successful, in fact situations that are created itchy snatch here and there a few smiles ( pajama party based viagra, amateur porn movies etc etc etc) and the athleticism of the pair of actors (Hathaway's tits and ass Gyllenhaal) will surely help maintain una certa frivolezza nella storia, poi però il dramma della malattia fa versare fiumi di lacrime. Purtroppo non ho potuto fare a meno di focalizzarmi su quest'ultimo aspetto, ovvero che la povera Maggie sia malata, non di una malattia qualsiasi, ma di una particolarmente invalidante che affligge milioni di persone nel mondo a tutte le età. Poteva essere una buona occasione per riflettere sui problemi della sanità americana, sulle politiche delle case farmaceutiche, ma sarebbe stato tradire le premesse del film. In pratica un'occasione mancata: tutto viene messo sullo stesso piano (sesso, sentimenti, malattia, carriera) e per questo banalizzato. Mi ha fatto ridere, mi ha fatto pour some tear, but at times I found it slightly offensive to the fake gooders.
